Aurora Public Library

Aurora Public Library in Aurora IL was established in 1881 and was first located in the Grand Army of the Republic Hall. By 1904, it was moved to a new building thanks to a generous grant from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The library, throughout the years, has gone through several renovations, with that so have its ethos and values.

The public library also acquired a Bookmobile to extend its services to Aurora’s school children. One of the Aurora Public Library goals is to help students succeed from early literacy through high school. The library has provided parents with the resources needed to help their children in academics and provided students with homework help through library resources. The library has an extensive list of resources and books to promote early literacy. The library has also efficiently taken several measures to help the community during the pandemic. You can access online tutors, create online study groups, and write and language labs. Aurora Public Library also hosts storytelling time for virtual and in-person children.

The Bookmobile visits schools, parks, and community centres and works alongside Homebound Delivery Services, providing essential resources and materials to anyone facing physical and transportation barriers. The library values and strives to create an inclusive space and diversity. The Bookmobile has an extensive collection of English and Spanish books for people of all ages. As well as several audiobooks, graphic novels, magazines and DVDs. The bookmobile is also available for special event appearances, from parades to block parties and other community events. The public Library has also organised a Travelling Story Time Service conducted at various sites like preschools and parks. The staff brings stories, songs, puppets to preschool children.

Aurora Public Library also believes in supporting the local arts community. It has created a local author collection. It is a donation-based collection where local Illinois writers can submit their work. The library also owns three sewing machines for customers to check out and various musical instruments.

The Public Library also hosts an array of different events throughout the year. We are constantly adapting to the needs of the community. This year the library organised several preparatory classes for the citizenship exam. The library provides new immigrants information on citizenship, English language, employment and social services to participate in American Life fully. Apart from preparatory classes, the library also has reading groups virtually attended due to the pandemic.
