Blackberry Farm

Blackberry Farm in Aurora Illinois derives its name from the Blackberry creek, which runs along the park’s east side. Set on 54 scenic acres, Blackberry Farm has something for everyone, from museums to rides and attractions, as well as an arboretum with several varieties of trees and historical agricultural gardens. When in Aurora, if you’re looking for a well-rounded experience of the town or want to spend some quality time with the family, Blackberry Farm is a must-visit.

Blackberry Farm has 5 Museums on-site, all displaying artefacts from the 19th century. The Wagner House is a post-civil era house once owned by a prominent 19th century Aurora family who also is believed to be involved in the Underground Railroad. The Early Streets Museum takes you back to downtown Aurora in the 1880s. Then there is the Carriage House which houses an extensive 40-vehicle collection of horse-drawn carriages and carts. Aurora was nicknamed the city of lights as it was the first city in America to install electric street lighting. This town has a rich history which the Blackberry farm does a commendable job in showcasing. There are many historical demonstrations of how life was like in Aurora back in the day. The demonstrations include blacksmithing, pottery, schoolhouse and many more depicting life in Aurora in the 1840s.

Blackberry Farm also has many other rides and attractions perfect for a family day out, apart from the museums. One famous attraction is the steam engine. It’s a replica train that takes passengers on a 4-mile tour around Lake Gregory, across the grounds of Blackberry Farm. The train is also wheelchair accessible. There is also an old-fashioned carrousel taking you back to the times of fairs and carnivals of the past. You can also enjoy paddle boating in Lake Gregory, saddle up and ride a pony (provided you meet the age and weight requirement). There are plenty of ways to enjoy one of Aurora’s finest recreation parks.

Blackberry Farm also hosts special events that include parent and child painting classes. The farm allows food from outside, as it has several designated picnic spots on its ground. Blackberry farm also has special family fun days, where on select Wednesdays, Illinois residents get free admission to the park. The park is also handicapped accessible, and some rides like the paddle boat and train are designed for wheelchair access.
