Why Heat Pumps Are a Smart Choice for Des Plaines Homes
Heat pumps have become one of the most practical and efficient comfort solutions for homes in the Des Plaines area. Unlike traditional systems that generate heat, a heat pump moves heat from one place to another, which makes it remarkably efficient during both the cold winter months and the warm, humid summers our area is known for.
For homeowners looking to reduce energy costs without sacrificing comfort, a heat pump can handle both heating and cooling from a single system. Many of our customers are surprised to find that a properly sized and installed heat pump performs exceptionally well even when temperatures in Cook County drop during a typical Illinois winter.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my heat pump needs repair or full replacement?
This is one of the most common questions we hear from Des Plaines homeowners. If your system is more than 12 to 15 years old and requires frequent repairs, replacement often makes more financial sense in the long run. For newer systems showing performance issues, a diagnostic visit can pinpoint whether a repair will restore full efficiency. Our team can walk you through an honest assessment with no pressure. Schedule a visit to get started.
Can a heat pump really keep up during a cold Illinois winter?
Modern heat pumps have come a long way and are designed to perform effectively in colder climates than many people expect. That said, in areas like Des Plaines where temperatures can dip well below freezing, we often recommend a dual-fuel setup or a system with a supplemental heating source to ensure consistent comfort on the coldest nights. We will help you choose the right configuration for your home and budget.
Do you service both residential and commercial heat pump systems in Des Plaines?
Yes, McNally’s serves both homeowners and commercial businesses throughout Des Plaines and nearby communities including Park Ridge, Rosemont, and Elk Grove Village. Whether you manage a small office or a larger commercial property, we have the experience to handle heat pump service and installation at any scale. Visit our scheduling page to set up a time that works for you.
How often should I have my heat pump serviced?
We generally recommend having your heat pump serviced at least once a year, though twice yearly is ideal since the system handles both heating and cooling. A spring checkup before cooling season and a fall checkup before heating season can help catch small issues early and keep efficiency where it should be. Consistent maintenance is one of the best ways to extend the life of your investment.
Can I pair a heat pump with my existing ductwork in my Des Plaines home?
In many cases, yes. If your home already has ductwork in good condition, a ducted heat pump system can often be integrated without a full overhaul. However, older or inefficient ductwork can affect performance, so we typically recommend an assessment as part of the installation process. If ductwork is not an option, a ductless mini-split system may be an excellent fit. You can also explore our air duct cleaning services to get your existing ductwork in the best possible shape.
