If you’re looking for a system that handles both heating and cooling efficiently, a heat pump may be worth a serious look, and McNally’s can help you figure out whether it’s the right fit for your situation.

What Is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is an all-in-one heating and cooling system that moves heat rather than generating it. In the summer, it works like a central air conditioner, pulling heat out of your home and releasing it outside. In the winter, the process reverses as it extracts heat from the outdoor air and transfers it inside to warm your space.
Because heat pumps move existing heat rather than burning fuel to create it, they tend to operate more efficiently than traditional gas furnaces under the right conditions. Modern heat pumps (including cold-climate models) are designed to perform reliably even when outdoor temperatures drop significantly, making them a more viable option in the Chicago area than they were in previous generations of the technology.
Heat pumps are available in several configurations:
  • Air-source heat pumps are the most common type, which exchange heat with the outdoor air
  • Ductless mini-split heat pumps are air-source systems that work without ductwork, ideal for zoned comfort or spaces without existing ducts
  • Dual-fuel systems: a heat pump paired with a gas furnace, allowing the system to automatically switch to whichever fuel source is most efficient at a given temperature

Is a Heat Pump Right for Your Home or Business?

Heat pumps aren’t the right answer for every situation, and we won’t tell you otherwise. They tend to be a strong fit when:
  • You’re replacing or upgrading both your heating and cooling equipment at the same time
  • Your home has existing ductwork in good condition
  • You’re interested in reducing your reliance on gas heating
  • You’re building new construction and have flexibility in system design
  • You’re exploring a dual-fuel setup to balance efficiency and performance in colder temperatures
If your situation is better suited to a different system, like a high-efficiency furnace, a traditional central air setup, or a ductless mini-split, we’ll tell you that too. Our job is to help you make a good decision for your property.

Heat Pump Installation

Installing a heat pump involves more than swapping out equipment. Proper sizing, system design, and integration with your existing setup all play a role in how well the system performs and how efficiently it operates over time.
Before recommending a system, our team will assess your home or building, your existing infrastructure, your heating and cooling goals, and your budget. If you’re considering a dual-fuel setup or transitioning from an older system, we’ll help you understand what that looks like practically, including any infrastructure upgrades that may be involved.

Heat Pump Repair

If your heat pump isn’t performing as expected, McNally’s can diagnose the problem and walk you through your repair options honestly. We service all major brands and work to minimize downtime wherever possible.

Heat Pump Maintenance & Tune-Ups

Like any HVAC system, heat pumps benefit from regular maintenance. A tune-up typically includes inspecting and cleaning the indoor and outdoor coils, checking refrigerant charge, testing the reversing valve and defrost cycle, inspecting electrical connections and controls, and verifying overall system performance.
Staying current on maintenance helps your system operate efficiently and can reduce the likelihood of larger issues developing over time. We recommend scheduling a tune-up at least once a year, ideally before the season when you’ll rely on the system most. Check out our Pot of Gold Maintenance Plan for more info!
