The William Tanner House Museum in Aurora 60502 is a must-visit for history aficionados. The Italianate-style house was built in 1857 by one of the prominent merchants of Aurora, William Tanner. The family owned the house till 1937, after which William Tanner’s daughters donated it to the Aurora Historical Society. This house is part of the National Register of Historic Places and is frequented by local, regional and international visitors.

The 16-bedroom house exhibits the Italianate features that were a part of a unique era of architecture. The high ceilings, oak grained woodwork, antique furnishings, and ornate plaster decoration can give visitors a glimpse of what it was like to be a part of the Tanner Family living in Aurora. It took William Tanner 20 years to build a house of this stature for his family. He had first come to Aurora in 1835 as an ambitious 20-year-old trained surveyor. His contributions to the community of Aurora are a pride for the community. Visitors are encouraged to come to the Tanner House on July 4 to celebrate American Independence Day. The historical society of Aurora plans various family activities. In December, the home is decorated for the Christmas season.

When visiting the Tanner house museum, you will be transported to the 1800s. The curators have done an excellent job renovating and adding authentic furniture and decor to the house. The docents are always ready to answer questions related to the home, family, and aurora community back in the day.

The museum contains several artefacts of great significance to the Aurora community. According to Illinois: A Descriptive and Historical Guide, the house comprises “Aurora’s first piano” as well as other ornaments and intimate letters. There is even an original Lincoln Letter! The museum also organises reunions for the older generation living in and around Aurora to come together, share stories and remember the early days of their historic town and valley.
